Oakham’s cricketers have enjoyed one of the strongest starts to the season in the sport’s recent history at the School.
The 1st XI are not only enjoying a superb season, with some particularly impressive wins along the way. For a full breakdown of the matches played and wins accrued, click here. Most notably the boys’ performance against Bedford, a school renowned for its cricketing excellence, where the team won by an impressive 9 wickets, chasing down 251 for the loss of just 1 wicket 1. The team is also progressing nicely through the National Schools 20:20 tournament and are looking forward to next stage: against Trent in the Midlands Final.
The squad’s success all began with the School’s first ever pre-season tour to Dubai, where the guaranteed good weather provided some excellent outdoor play, following the months of indoor training. “The tour massively helped prepare the squad to hit the ground running this season,” says Director of Cricket, Neil Johnson. “It certainly seems to be proving to be beneficial as we go into Half Term with a string of successes under our belt.”
Indicative of Oakham’s approach to sport, cricket has never been solely focused on the successes of just the 1st XI squad. One of the highlights of the season so far, indeed we might be so bold to say of cricket at Oakham, was the staggering performance of the U15b team. We saw an astonishing 10th wicket partnership of 148 runs – an incredible 128 of which were in boundaries that included 12 6s and 14 4s. Read more about this outstanding game here.
It has also been a historic moment for the School, with Oakham’s first ever girls team not only playing their first game, but also winning it! The team challenged Oundle away at Oundle, winning comprehensively. Batting first the girls scored 149 for 4 in their 20 overs. Oundle replied with 99 for 7 in 20 overs, with the girls winning by 50 runs. and hopefully setting the standard for the remainder of the term’s matches.
Finally, and not inconsequentially, the 1st X1 teams, both boys and girls, are now proud wearers of Oakham’s new cricket cap. Designed to reflect the caps worn in days gone past, thanks to the support of the OO department, they can be seen proudly worn in all future fixtures.
