One of the most popular musicals in Broadway history, Chicago, returns to Oakham this Autumn term!
Actors from the Third Form to the Seventh Form are this time being challenged to perform the full-length version of the play – which is rarely tackled in schools. “We don’t shy away from a challenge,” says Oakham’s Director of Drama, Gilly Norell. “The school version of the play is simplified and the number of protagonists are reduced – none of which is required at Oakham. We now want to take on the challenge of the full-length play to give even more pupils the chance to take part – to be able to develop as many acting and singing talents as is possible.”
The full cast list, of 26 pupils, has just been confirmed following a busy round of auditions last week. Now the cast are already busy with their first rehearsals. Both female leads are Drama Scholars. Kitty is bringing her talents (that have been recognised by the National Youth Theatre) to the role of Roxie Hart, whilst Lizzie, who has only just joined Oakham, is taking on the role of Velma Kelly. Seventh Former Theo is their lawyer, Billy Flynn.
The cast includes pupils from across the School, not just those who are Scholars or in the Upper School. “There are three Third Form pupils, which is a testament to our goal of offering ‘drama for all’,” says Gilly. “This is a fantastic learning experience for these younger pupils – who will gain so much from experiencing, first-hand, the rehearsal etiquette and discipline that’s needed to perform at the highest levels”. Gilly hopes that this experience will lay great foundations for Oakham’s future productions.
The actors are cast. The stage (will soon be) set. The performances will no doubt be sell-out – so do get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. Performances are every evening at 7.45pm from Tuesday 26 November to Saturday 30 November. Tickets can be purchased by emailing email@example.com or telephoning 01572 758653
