Britten's Cabaret Songs

In our second Music at Lunchtime recital in All Saints' Church, we were treated to a distinguished recital from Form 7 soprano, Holly. She based the recital around Benjamin Britten’s Cabaret Songs: Tell me the Truth about Love; Funeral Blues; Johnny and Calypso. The programme also included A Word On My Ear, a comedic aria written about the challenges facing an opera singer.

Holly delivered the recital with great dramatic effect. The audience were hooked by the impressive changes of style that Holly brought to the Cabaret Songs, from the love song Tell me the Truth about Love, to the dark and tense Funeral Blues, to the lively folk song Johnny, which preceded the tongue-twisting Calypso. Each song provided different technical challenges which Holly overcame with consummate ease. The icing on the cake of the recital was A Word On My Ear which Holly performed with great humour and lyricism. The rousing reception was fitting for an exciting recital.
