The Art, Design and Technology department hosted a successful Guest Night for students studying these subjects in Forms 5, 6 and 7.
The Director of Art & Design, Simon Poppy, opened the event with a few words and introduced the speakers and guests.
The first speaker was Claire Strickland, a Milliner who makes bespoke hats and headpieces, which star in theatres, films, operas and pantomimes. She spoke about her career journey as well as the creation of her website, Facebook page and her blog, which includes hat making techniques and tutorials.
Old Oakhamian Mike Hart, who works at Jaguar Land Rover, gave a fascinating talk about the design and manufacturing processes involved in making a car.
The department also welcomed another Old Oakhamian Felicity Milton, who works as a Project Manager for Brand Strategy at Adidas. Felicity’s riveting presentation was about the company using new technology for example Adidas shoes incorporating 3D-printing technology.
Following the lectures, guests, students and staff made their way to the Barraclough dining hall for supper. Guests were seated alongside the students, and it was a chance for them to speak on an informal level about Art, Design and Technology careers, degree pathways and potential work experience.
Undergraduate Design and Engineering Fellow Miss Shubhi Mishra said “It was a fantastic evening and a good opportunity for our pupils to learn about where Art, Design and Technology can lead them.”
