Oakham’s 1st XI played some outstanding hockey against Calday Grange Grammar School on Monday to reach the quarter finals of the National Hockey Finals, which is an open draw nationally. Oakham’s success follows last year’s appearance in the National Final.
The Oakham team were put under pressure early on in the match from a strong Calday side, who were clearly very up for the game, but Oakham scored with their first attacking move and raced into a 2-0 lead.
Calday Grange then pulled two goals back before Oakham scored again to take the scoreline to 3-2 at half-time.
Two early goals from Oakham in the second half forced Calday to change tactics and push their forwards to score, leaving their defence vulnerable. Oakham took full advantage of this and continued to rack up goals right up until the final whistle with a 9-2 win.
Directory of Hockey James Bateman said, “It was a lengthy bus journey to our host’s grounds but the boys coped with this brilliantly and did not let it affect their play.” He continued, “With some strong schools left in the competition, it is proving to be an exciting time for the 1st XI. It is excellent to see us continue our cup run after last year’s success reaching the National Finals and we hope to go one better this year!”
