Oxbridge and Medical Offers
Oxbridge
In the Sixth Form, we encourage all pupils with outstanding GCSE results to consider an application to either Cambridge or Oxford universities. Some pupils' ambitions will lie elsewhere, but for those who do wish to make an application, we provide a range of support and guidance.
Our aim is to help Oxbridge aspirants to demonstrate their academic potential in the most effective way possible in their applications. Each applicant is mentored both by a subject specialist in their chosen area of study and the Senior Academic Mentor, the former providing weekly subject-specific guidance and preparation for admissions tests, whilst the latter oversees the process, with particular responsibility for course and college choice, personal statements, references and interview practice.
Over the past three years, Oakhamians received Oxbridge offers from:

Medical/clinical courses
Around a dozen Form 7 pupils apply for clinical courses – mainly medicine – each year. We have a busy programme of events and activities for students considering clinical courses, including the Royal School of Medicine Careers Day (held at Oakham), lectures, mock interviews, personal statement workshops and more. Every two years, we also run a practical work experience trip to Costa Rica, where students run health clinics for local residents, measuring blood pressure, BMI and glucose.
There are Old Oakhamians training to be doctors, veterinary surgeons and dentists at Bristol, Imperial College, Nottingham and Sheffield, among many other UK universities. In addition, former pupils regularly receive offers to study medicine abroad.

Senior Academic Mentor
I have been Senior Academic Mentor since September 2015. The role is a development of my previous role as Master of Scholars, and involves responsibility for overseeing and encouraging the progress of pupils holding an academic award, and also the Oxbridge process. I was Head of Religion and Philosophy for nine years, having joined the School in 2005. In addition I am a tutor in the Upper School. I hold a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Warwick, following an MA in Continental Philosophy and a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and Literature (First Class).
