Strength & Conditioning

As part of Oakham School’s commitment to nurturing talent and performance in our top athletes, our full-time Strength and Conditioning (S&C) Coach, Joel Tratt, delivers individualised programmes on a one-to-one and group session basis to our elite sportsmen and sportswomen.

The aim of the Strength and Conditioning programmes is to give students the best possible chance to maximise their performance on the sports field, and to prevent injuries from occurring. With the long-term development of our athletes at the heart of everything we do, we seek to educate them on how best to train, recover and prepare for their respective sports.

Having previously provided Strength and Conditioning at Somerset County Cricket Club, Joel brings his professional expertise to Oakham to ensure that the training culture here is the right blend of hard work and enjoyment. He works closely with the coaching staff of all the different sports offered by Oakham, as well as external professional sporting bodies (pathways, academies and clubs) to help our students attain a level of physical fitness that will improve their chances of becoming professional athletes.

Joel works on all aspects of students’ strength and conditioning requirements, specific to their ages, physical development and sports, with an emphasis on flexibility as well as strength. The benefits of this training can also be seen beyond the gym; regular training breeds a strong work ethic within our students, which they can also apply to their academic work. Training sessions also provide an opportunity for students to switch off from academic and sporting pressures and channel their energy in a different direction.
