From the Deputy Head Boy

My name is Alex and I am your Deputy Head Boy this year. I joined Oakham in Form 3 from a prep school called Spratton Hall in Northamptonshire. For the past 4 years of my time at Oakham, I have been a flexi-boarder in Haywoods house and been fortunate enough to be head of house in my final year. Starting boarding fresh at Oakham was originally a big jump in my growing up. For the first few weeks, I struggled to get to grips with the day to day life, however, after a short while I settled into school life with the help of peers and teachers at the school. I am currently studying BTEC sport and A-level business with plans to go on a gap year, mainly in Africa.

Being in Haywoods has given me the space and time I need to be able to succeed in my time at Oakham. It has also provided me with many lifelong friends and that aspect of being in a family environment. Within this, I have taken part in many inter-house events such as house waterpolo and house rugby. All of these events have taken place with the common rivalry between Haywoods and Wharflands but also the rivalry to be the champions of Kilburn road.

The sports I play are rugby in the winter term and rugby 7’s in the spring term. When it comes to the summer term the school let me go home to play polo. This has benefitted me in many ways because it has enabled me to improve as a player. This is all because of how the school are very willing to help people try to achieve their goals.

A piece of advice in which I would give to new Oakhamians is that if you make a mistake, you must persevere and try to get it right next time around. The school offers many new things for you to try, so get involved with the activities you love as quickly as you can and don’t be scared to do so.
