Our award-winning Careers Department aims to equip every Oakhamian with all the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about life beyond School.
We are fully committed to providing exceptional careers advice to our pupils throughout their time at Oakham and achieve this by delivering an in-house Careers Programme; this is taught by 12 members of staff, led by a full-time Head of Careers, who have been specially trained in different areas of careers guidance.
Having a full-time Head of Careers means that we can ensure that our careers advice is up-to-date and relevant in today’s fast-changing job market and the constantly evolving world of university provision. This makes it easier for students to choose a career path that is right for them.
The principal benefit of providing our careers guidance internally, rather than outsourcing it, is that our careers teachers already know and understand the pupils; this helps the quality of the advice given, as it can be tailored to their needs and preferences. In fact, we can fit the careers interviews and advice sessions around our pupils’ busy days, meaning they don’t have to miss any lessons and can often do them in the comfort of their Houses.
The Careers Department is located on the ground floor of the Smallbone Library, which also houses an extensive Careers section; this is open to students all week from 8.00am–9.00pm and at the weekends too, so students have access to information at times that suit them.
The School works closely with external partners and contacts, as well as its extensive alumni network, to introduce students to careers and work experience. Numerous events are hosted each year, including a Careers and HE Fair, a Science Guest Night, Careers Week, and University Day.
The School is a member of the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO).
