Day pupils at Oakham are very much part of our 24/7 boarding environment, and benefit from the same extensive programme of activities and opportunities as our boarders.
Our eight Day Houses provide an excellent base for day pupils as they go about their busy lives. The Houses are open every day from 7.30am–7.30pm, allowing flexibility for working families, with staff on hand to help the pupils with their day-to-day needs. The Houses have large common rooms, a kitchen, many different areas for quiet work, including a study base for each pupil, and changing facilities. All Houses have space outdoors where the students can relax and let off steam. Our aim is to offer our day pupils exactly the same experience as a boarder but without the beds!
Because of the range of activities on offer, pupils sometimes end up starting and finishing the day at different times, depending on which event or club they are taking part in. To help families of day pupils in the Lower School, we offer the option of an Extended Day, a free service that provides some flexibility at the beginning and end of the school day.
In the morning, Lower School day pupils are welcome to join the boarders for breakfast in the Barraclough at 7.30am. After school, they can also stay for supper and supervised prep until 7.45pm. You can choose to do one or the other, or both, depending on your schedule, and you can choose which day/s to do this regularly on each term. If you’d like to know more about our extended day, please contact Val Harvey, Head of Lower School, who will be very happy to help and answer any questions you may have.
In the Middle and Upper School our flexible boarding arrangements offer pupils the chance to board between 3 and 5 nights a week. This is particularly popular with families who live further afield from Oakham, as it allows the chance for their son or daughter to spend the weekend at home after finishing sport on a Saturday afternoon.
