Sport Science The Sports Science Department are pleased to offer a challenging programme of study designed to meet the needs of students who require a range of subjects that provide a high quality, rigorous academic framework. The key to our approach is innovation; as we offer two leading edge courses, both internationally recognised. The IGCSE studied by forth and fifth form pupils provides a demanding scientific approach to the subject and is becoming increasing popular with good schools. At sixth form level we are joining an elite group of 12 schools worldwide who are delivering, the newly developed IB -– Sports, Exercise and Health Science course. At fourth form we offer the IGCSE in Physical Education provided by University of Cambridge International Examinations Board. IGCSE Physical Education This syllabus provides candidates with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of physical education. It is designed to foster enjoyment in physical activity by providing students with an opportunity to use a range of technology; video recordings, digital images and movement analysis software to record and analyse performance. By following the course students will be able to develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance and to appreciate the necessity for sound understanding of the principles and practices that underpin improved performance, better health and well-being. AS/A Level GCE Physical Education OCR This course takes a multidisciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry with the focal point being the performer and the performance. It allows students to appreciate the physiological, psychological and sociological issues that underpin both mass participation and elite athlete development. The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education and provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to develop their understanding of the multi-faceted world of sport as both an academic discipline and a global economic industry, and in this respect can provide a natural link to scientific and humanities courses. IB - International Baccalaureate – Sports, Exercise and Health Science, new for 2009 There is opportunity to be one of the first to study this leading edge IB subject. This discipline was introduced to the IB programme in 2007 and Oakham will join only 12 centres worldwide that offer this course. This is an innovative course which enables students to investigate the scientific background to success in sport and in tune with the ethos of the IB allows investigation of moral, moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications provide opportunities for scientific study and creativity within a global context that will stimulate and challenge students.
