Week Ten Saturday 14th November Despite torrential rains the weekend’s sport ran to schedule without cancellation. Both Rugby and Hockey 1st teams notched up notable wins against Rugby School and Trent College. A busy week also saw girls in action in Under 18 county netball, zonal hockey and boys winning through to the next rounds of Daily Mail Cups at Under 15 and Under 18. De La Rey Veenendaal made it through to the 30 man Midlands Under 18 Rugby Squad whilst Sam Tipper and Miles Marlow-Thomas represented Leicestershire Under 16's in their win over Staffordshire on Sunday. Somerby Hamdorff finished an impressive 2nd in the ESAA regional cross country competition at Shepshead. Perhaps the most impressive performance of the weekend though was the Oakham grass playing surfaces, which despite the inches of rain they received still managed to hold up as well as any surface in the country – many thanks to Richard Dexter and his team, as ever. As the drought continued our rugby sides were hit by cancellation on Saturday as the ground at Warwick school caused three match to be called off. Nonetheless the new block fixture between the two schools got off to a great start with a tough physical clash at first team level - Oakham scraping through 10-7 at the final whistle. The 1st hockey girls stumbled with a defeat to Oundle but will no doubt bounce back stonger next week. The array of hockey players who have gained representative recognition in the past week is quite exceptional and the school is rightly proud of their achievements. Week Three Results & Scores here. Week Two With the hot weather continuing late into the month our hockey and rugby teams took on old rivals in Stowe and new comers in Nottingham High School. Our hockey teams seem to go from strength to strength and in fixtures against Stowe, Welbeck and Bedford the girls put in some excellent performances – the highlight of which was the 1st XI’s 11-0 victory with five goals coming from Abi Padley. Abi was catching up with her captain jess Anand who bagged five last week against Rugby School.
The 1st XV lost for the first time this season in a close and physical encounter with NHS; despite a last ditch rally with two tries in the last minute the school’s top side were defeated 24-21. Our other sides got the better of the opposition in the majority of the block; notably the U16s who turned round a defeat against the same side last season in the Daily Mail Cup. Our staff were in action too this weekend - and congratulations to Emily Rooke and Oli Simper who successfully completed the Great North Run. Week Two Results & Scores here. Week One In hot September sunshine the winter term got off to a fine start with block fixtures against Stowe (Boys Rugby) and Rugby School (Girls Hockey). Following a pre season tour to Cumbria the girls 1st XI stormed to an outstanding 7-1 victory against a strong Rugby side. Jess Anand bagged 5 goals with Abigail Padley knocking in the other two. The girls also played on Sunday against the OOs – with the Old Oakhamian side sneaking home with a 3-2 win. Elsewhere the Oakham hockey sides got the better of their opposition with the U15A side also scoring seven against Rugby.
The rugby season was kicked off with a curtain raiser between S. Anselm’s and Witham Hall prep schools on Doncaster Close – a great spectacle with some free flowing rugby saw Witham Hall run out winners. The block fixture against Stowe saw all our A teams come out victorious and wins in all the senior fixture – all in close fought encounters. The 1st XV pulled off a 41-20 win against a powerful Stowe side. A sometimes scrappy encounter saw some great tries scored from long range. De la Rey Veenendaal grabbed two on his debut, but the pick of the bunch being Alex Key’s 90 yard score through almost the entire Stowe team. Special thanks this week to the grounds and catering staff who once again did us proud. The Under 14 boys rugby side got their Oakham Rugby Careers under way with three very good wins at A, B and C level away at Trent. Week One Results & Scores here.
