Oakham's Music Department is energetic and forward-thinking. We are committed to embracing and nurturing the academic and performance abilities of any pupil who is interested in music, whether as specialist or simply enthusiast.

Over 40% of our pupils learn a musical instrument, and almost half the School is involved in practical music making within choirs, bands, orchestras and music theatre productions. Nearly 600 individual music lessons and rehearsals for 20 major ensembles take place each week, and musical activity is buoyant at all levels in School.

Academic Music

Music is taught as an academic subject to all pupils from Lower One (Year 6) to Third Form and as an option at GCSE, A Level and within the International Baccalaureate.

Music Lessons

Pupils benefit from having teachers who maintain active professional performing careers. Lessons in singing and all major orchestral instruments (as well as saxophone, harp, organ, percussion, drums, classical guitar, bass guitar, electric guitar, jazz piano) are offered within School. Associated Board music exams, for which there is an exceptionally high success rate, are held each term. Particularly talented musicians are also eligible for music scholarships and exhibitions at 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance levels, subject to performance at audition.

Oakham students perform in over 80 concerts each year, ranging from informal concerts that introduce pupils to the experience of performing in public for the first time, to major performances at home and in cities across the UK and abroad. CD recordings, annual music tours and major competition successes are also features of Oakham music.

Pupils regularly participate in acclaimed youth music organisations such as the National Children’s Orchestra, National Youth Brass Band, National Youth Music Theatre, CBSO Youth Orchestra and other county/regional orchestras. A number of pupils go on to study music beyond Oakham, including those at major universities and music colleges.
