Felicity Lott and Elizabeth Watts commend Oakham's singers

Song competition winners

Oakham's second English Song Competition offered a feast of solo singing in Chapel and Old Hall. We were fortunate to have the distinguished services of acclaimed professional sopranos Dame Felicity Lott and Elizabeth Watts, who offered feedback to over 70 singers drawn from every year of the school. Once again, the event primarily had the feeling of a festival of singing, offering performance opportunities for a range of singing pupils as well as the chance to hear their peers. A winner and a runner-up was selected from each year group class to perform in an afternoon recital in Chapel, and many singers young and old were verbally commended by the adjudicators throughout the day. The standard of the fourteen performances which ended the day was exceptionally high, emphasising the quality of vocal talent amongst both boys and girls in every year of the school. Two performers were particularly recognised for their exceptional performances of challenging music by Gerald Finzi and John Dowland, with Christopher Earley winning the overall English Song Competition title for 2010.
