Institute of Physics conference 19th September 2009 Over 70 physics teachers converged on Oakham for the third annual Institute of Physics conference in the East Midlands. The keynote speaker was Professor Brian Foster (Oxford and CERN) who gave an insight into Einstein’s foundation for the present search for the Higgs boson ( a fundamental particle which may be responsible for giving us mass) Workshops followed in the physics department , where delegates attended some practical sessions exhibiting A level investigations and SEP experiments, had ‘Fun with Forces,’ built compressed air rocket launchers and studied some strategies for encouraging Girls into Physics. A very busy day, with a fine lunch in stumps (special thanks to the catering department) and presentations to finish. Trevor Kerslake (St Ives) and Kate Elliott (Spalding) were presented with an engraved tankard and pen respectively to mark their support of local physics network events.
