Trip to Kenya to Renovate Village School 5 February 2010
Pupils are packing their bags as they get ready to fly to Kenya to help rebuild a remote village school. The Oakhamians will be working hard during half-term as they renovate a village school in Mutethia, a settlement which sits on the equator close to the foothills of Mount Kenya. The sixteen pupils, aged 16 and 17, have already raised £3,400 to fund the work they will be carrying out. The boys and girls will be building desks for the Kenyan children as well as replastering walls and renovating classrooms. “We hope this February’s trip will mark the beginning of a long term relationship between ourselves and the school in Mutethia” says Geography teacher Kirsty Evans who will be leading the trip. “Our pupils have worked hard to raise money to fund this work & they will be working even harder when we are in Kenya. As well as the renovation work, they will also be teaching lessons in subjects such as English, Maths, Science and Art.”
