North American universities, Autumn 2012
3 October 2012
Oakham School was represented at three meetings last week with admissions staff from North American universities who are travelling in the UK this Autumn.
On Tuesday 25 September a group travelled to Oxford to hear presentations by Stanford, Duke, Georgetown, and the University of Pennsylvania.
Two days later Oakham was represented at the ‘The American Dream’ meeting in London which included lectures given by tutors from Yale and the University of British Columbia among others, concluding with a panel discussion chaired by Sir Trevor McDonald OBE. Issues raised included: the holistic nature of the application process; predicted grades and transcripts; the relative importance of examination marks and SAT scores; English language requirements for undergraduate degrees.
Finally, a group of Oakhamians enjoyed the annual USA College Day in London, organized by the Fulbright Commission (29 September). This event, attended by over 150 universities, is a fair format and provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to research, compare and meet many people from different types of American institution; the school was also able to renew links fostered during its New England University Visits programme of October 2011. We are most grateful to all those who organized these events and to Yale University, in particular, for its role in the Oakham - Yale Educational Fellowship.
The next event for Oakham USA university applicants will be a talk by the Dean of Admissions of Princeton University on 11 October 2012.
