Careers Fair and Annual Lecture
31 October 2012
This year’s Careers Fair was held, as usual, in the Barraclough on the Friday afternoon before Exeat. Nearly half of the guests were new to the event this year and a similar proportion were Old Oakhamians, parents or others connected to the school via staff. New to the Fair in 2012 included: Sarah Randall OO (City Law Tutors), Ellen Manning (nee Branagh) OO (the Press Association), Fred Dearden OO (Deloittes), Jethro Hancock OO (Lloyds) and Ashleigh Burns (Sport Lived). During the event, Will Bunn OO gave a talk on Teach First, one of the largest graduate employers in the UK. Teach First has a large range of private sector sponsors who seek to recruit Teach First participants after their two years in teaching, including PWC, the Civil Service, Barclays, McKinsey & Co and P&G.
On the Saturday following the Fair, parents were invited to the Annual Higher Education Lecture, this year given by Sally Hyman, Survey Director, High Fliers. High Fliers Research Limited is an independent market research company that has been at the forefront of graduate recruitment research at the UK's leading universities since 1994. It has now worked with more than 140 national & international employers. The company also conducts regular surveys of employers to research the latest graduate vacancy levels, starting salaries and benchmark recruitment practices. The lecture was well received, one parent describing Sally’s talk as ‘the best education lecture I have been to’. Oakham School is very grateful to all those who contributed to these events, often giving of their time for free. The next Sixth Form event will be the Industry Convention in March 2013. In addition, the school is hosting, for the first time, a medical careers day for Sixth Formers from throughout the East Midlands to be jointly run with the Royal Society of Medicine.
