Professional Music in the Chapel - Friday 18 September VOCES8 From Gibbons to Gershwin We are privileged to welcome the international award-winning octet VOCES8 to the Chapel. Whether they’re singing Jazz, Pop, Classical, or Spiritual, VOCES8 is simply one of the best unaccompanied vocal groups around, performing over 70 concerts worldwide this year alone.
Founder member Dingle Yandell OO is delighted to be bringing the group to Oakham to sing some of VOCES8’s classic repertoire, including works by Gibbons (O Clap Your Hands) and Holst (Nunc Dimittis), and popular songs such as I Got Rhythm, Fever and Jailhouse Rock.. After the success of last year’s dance project, artist Ann Dunphy will be leading Oakham students to ‘draw’ on a journey through the medium of suitcases, from which wonderful objects - many old and fragile – will be unpacked and opened out.

The Trio play with a gripping intensity and deep understanding as you will discover in this programme which ranges from the classical beauty of Haydn’s Trio in C, Schumann’s romantic second Piano Trio, through the simple beauty of Dvorák’s Dumky Trio to Copland’s avant-garde work, Vitebsk. We present this exhibition in further celebration of the birth of Charles Darwin. It includes superb hand-coloured engravings of invertebrates by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier (1769–1832), part of a collection donated to Oakham School’s Biology Department by Dr Colin Leakey of the Sir Joseph Banks Society, together with images of the Galapagos. Two leading soloists feature in Bach’s intense cantata, Ich habe genug, before the Big Band up the tempo for a second half of Jazz. Brahms’ humanist approach to the Requiem is complemented by Wagner’s well-loved, emotional Siegfried Idyll which completes this satisfying, thoughtful programme.
