For entry at age 10 and 11+ into Jerwoods, our Lower School

Candidates come to the School for an examination. This usually takes place in January for those hoping to enter the School in the following September.

Children sitting the examination come from a wide variety of schools and display different rates of academic progress. Our examination, therefore, seeks to discover the inherent potential of the candidate. We hope, however, for neat written work, competent spelling and grammar, fluent reading and a sound basic knowledge of the primary school mathematics syllabus. Copies of past papers are not released. This ensures no child should be at an advantage as a result of 'cramming' on past papers.

The overseas entrance procedure involves written papers in English and Mathematics, a diagnostic test of writing and learning skills and an interview. We can make arrangements for candidates from overseas to sit the examination abroad.

In assessing each candidate, we attach great importance to a detailed report from the Head of the pupil's present school. Parents are notified of the examination result within ten days. Candidates who are offered a place but defer for a year will have to re-sit the Examination.

Members of the Lower School automatically enter the Middle School and will not normally be required to sit a further examination. However, we expect their academic attainment to be equivalent to 55% at Common Entrance.
