Middle School 13+ and 14+ entry
Pupils usually join the Middle School at 13+. A few places may also be available at 14+.
Entry is either through the Common Entrance Examination taken
at the candidate’s preparatory school in June, or through the Oakham Entrance Examination. The expected pass mark in the Common Entrance Examination is 55%.
Non Common Entrance Candidates
Those who have not followed the Common Entrance syllabus sit Oakham School’s Year 9 (13+) examination in January, or by arrangement with the Registrar. This examination consists of papers in English, Mathematics and Science with the option to sit a Language paper. An assessment at interview is also part of the process. Past entrance papers are not released but a syllabus is available. Although assessed by different criteria candidates are expected to perform at a level equivalent to 55% at Common Entrance.
Applicants whose first language is not English may be required to take Oakham School’s English Language test.
Examination and scholarship dates can be found here.
Transition from Oakham's Lower School
There is no examination for members of the Lower School entering the Middle School but it is expected that their academic performance should equate to 55% or better at Common Entrance.
